Abstract

In view of the extreme scarcity of black scholars in science and engineering, even the militant left could not fault the Mas? sachusetts Institute of Technology for its slow progress in faculty diversification. But, unlike its peers, MIT has never fallen back on the standard "no blacks in the academic pipeline" defense. MIT continues to pursue an aggressive program of finding and recruit? ing black faculty. MIT's peer institution, the California Institute of Technology, has only one black person on a faculty of 295.
